Public Policy Research
Our research mainly tackles the complex challenges of development with a multidisciplinary approach and works with a network of partners in development policies and practices. Especially, the ADI conducts research focusing on public policy areas that have succeeded in Korea, and which can be implemented in other developing countries. The output of the research includes articles and book series.
This ESRC funded project brings together a multidisciplinary team of researchers from the UK and South Korea to contribute to the development of a body of knowledge, academic exchange and collaboration, and dissemination activities focusing on critical human security and public policy challenges in a post-Covid world.
Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Assistance for Sustaining Peace
In preparation for the future cooperation projects between South and North Koreas, the study selected and developed realistic projects that can be carried out. The study introduced and shared the cooperation plan for sustaining peace in various sectors as maritime cooperation, global governance, humanitarian assistance, etc.
Korea’s Strategies for International Development Cooperation through Multilateralism
The reasearch is conducted for contribution to theoretical aspects of multilateralism in international development cooperation policy as well as multilateral cooperation strategy in Korea's international development cooperation policy
AI, Public Administration and ODA : Case Studies
Through a seminar with the research findings, it has improved understanding of AI technology status and derived an application and a utilization plan of AI technology in international development cooperation sector
International Development Cooperation of South Korea: New Strategies for an Uncertain World
The research analyzed international development cooperation policies and behaviors to derive the direction of international development cooperation. It is also analyzed the Korea's role as an independent agent of international development cooperation in the post COVID-19 era and provide an opportunity to discuss the development of a new policy and institutation foundation in the field.
AI, Public Administration and ODA
The study analyzed the current status of AI technology application in developing coutries and explored the possibility that international organizations and developed countries can provide AI and Big Data solutions to developing countries. A seminar was held to share the research results, enhance understandings of the current status AI technology in developing countries, and derive a plan to utilize and apply AI technologies in international development cooperation field.
Basic Research for the Improvement of the Administration and Evaluation System of the Asia Development Institute
The research analyzed and examined the current status of Asian Development Institute's research projects for strengthening political research and improving research sharing performance of the institute to derive suggestions on the expansion direction of research projects.
A Study on South Korea’s ODA Practices in African Developing Countries
The research analyzed the quantitative and qualitative aspects of Korea's ODA policy for Africa, which is continuously expanding in scale, to understand the support pattern. It is establishing policy and institutional implications and forming the basis for deriving support directions suitable for the growing demand for aid development in Africa.
A Theoretical Study on Mutual Win-win and Packaged Emerging Market Entry Strategy and Role of ODA
The research analyzed the role that ODA should play in mutual win-win and packaged emerging market and a theoretical plan that can make a synergy between the two. In particular, the three roles of ODA (catalyst, filter, and incentive role) are reviewed and applied to the emerging market entry framework to present concrete strategies and policy directions.
A Study on the International Development Cooperation Policy for Fragile States
It analyzes the direction, characteristics, and strategies of Korea's development aid to vulnerable countries, and seeks policy alternatives for effective and integrated support strategies through comparison with Japan. Through this study, it contributes to the formation of a policy and institutional foundation for practical support, suggests Korea's mid-to-long-term vision and policy directions for supporting vulnerable countries, and promotes the development of more differentiated Korean development assistance.
Developing Training Materials about the Korean SOEs and QGOs Management Systems for Civil Servants in Other Countries
The research is contributing to enhancing the accessibility of overseas policy practitioners and revitalizing knowledge-sharing by updating the relevant materials in the English databook in the form of a working manual with the latest data. In particular, it will be used as basic data for introducing Korea's public institution management system to developing countries such as Africa, Latin America, and Asia, as well as related best practices.
A Study on the North Korean Development Cooperation in Preparation of a South-North Peace Regime
In operating an international cooperation body for poverty reduction, state reconstruction, and governance reconstruction in North Korea, the role of South Korea was re-examined, and strategies and policy alternatives for development cooperation in North Korea were proposed. In addition, by analyzing the meaning and effectiveness of development cooperation based on an understanding of North Korea's political society, it is contributing to the study of the North Korean development cooperation policy alignment. Finally, a plan for inter-Korean exchange and cooperation focusing on the fishery industry and the shipping industry was proposed.
Regional Case Studies
The ADI encourages the faculty of the GSPA to find appropriate development policy fitting diverse cultures and societies, as there is no ideal 'one-size-fits-all' development model across many regions. The ADI regional case studies tackle discrepancies between the present development policy recommendations and the circumstances of the issue country. This study offers more practical policy implications for developing countries. Following is the list of ongoing studies in 2014 which will produce working papers and journal articles.
Confronting climate change through cooperative enterprisese: The Case Study from Thailand and Vietnam
The research analyzed the role of cooperatives in increasing rural households' resilience in the challenges caused by climate change and derived a role in promoting the government's solution to respond to disasters. In addition, as a mechanism to promote adaptation to climate change, the research studied cases of Thailand and Vietnam and sought how to apply the cases to other Asian countries which have similar climate challenges.
Why should East Asian nations help developing countries for their development? A normative reflection for South Korea
Based on Korea's case, the research sought a normative basis for the international development cooperation and a policy strategy that could lead to the implementation of ODA. It also analyzed the distinct need for a political basis in Korea and other East Asian countries. This provided an opportunity to ciritically reflect on past ODA policies and provide clear normative basis for the future ODA implemantaion.
Global Social Policy and East Asia Social Policy: With a Focus on Indonesia
Through research on global social policy, the policy direction was suggested so that the international community's poverty reduction efforts can be effectively implemented in developing countries. In addition, through research on Indonesia's fiscal reform, it improved how to strategically respond to the global economic crisis and prepared a plan to strengthen institutional capacity.
Public Policy and Development in Fragile Situations
Based upon the current global issues and SDGs, the research is focused on analyzing the policies and challenges in fragile states in light of theoretical aspects. Also, through the case studies on States in fragile situations(Rwanda, DRC, Lebanon), the research is providing the implications and further strategies for Korea's policies on fragile States.
